ACC Reaches New Television Deal With ESPN Worth 17 Million Per Team

Acc2-300x232_medium

The Atlantic Coast Conference has finalized a television deal with ESPN, reportedly worth $17 million per school. The current deal the ACC has in place is worth around $13 million per year. The new deal in total is over the course of 15 years and worth $3.6 billion.

The addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC aided the conference's negotiation ability and put the ACC within shouting distance of the Big 12 deal, where each team is expected to receive around $20 million annually.

With the new deal, ESPN will televise three Friday night conference football games. Two of these games are guaranteed to be home games for Boston College and Syracuse with a third game reserved for Thanksgiving Friday. In addition to the Friday games, the conference will continue to have a prime time game on ESPN on Labor Day as well as select Thursday night contests. In total, 14 more conference games per year will be televised each year on the ESPN networks.

The deal comes at a time where the ACC is adding an additional two conference games per team in basketball. Each team will now play 18 conference games, increasing the number of games which can be aired on the ESPN platform. Additionally ESPNU will continue to air the Sunday Night ACC Hoops franchise.

This deal is undoubtedly good for the conference as a whole and particularly the smaller-market teams like Wake Forest. While higher-profile football teams will continue to complain about the conference-sharing revenue model, the blunt fact remains that ACC football is not anywhere close to many college football fan's radar.

What are your thoughts? Feel free to discuss with us in the comments or on the main SB Nation story. This is definitely a debate that doesn't have a simple answer, but with the ACC struggling in both football and basketball with the exception of notable outliers in the last few seasons, there had to be a place to start in these negotiations.

"I played and contributed as an underlassman, but I continued to work hard to get better every year," Visser said. "My senior year, there was an opportunity for me to be more of a go-to player, and I was able to take advantage of it because of the work I’d put in (previously). Big men tend to blossom late. In high school, I improved between my junior and senior year and I did in college as well."

That firsthand knowledge of how big men develop is the inspiration behind the first annual Kyle Visser Big Man Camp for players ages 11-18, which will be held July 16-18 at MVP Fieldhouse in Grand Rapids (Note: See the flyer at the bottom of this post or follow the link for details and to register.).

"I chose to work with big men for this camp because it’s what I’m most comfortable teaching," Visser said. "I understand how big men develop and grow into their own body later than guards do. We’re really going to stress and teach the fundamentals of post play — footwork, defensive strategies, playing with your back to the basket. There’s only so much we can do in a three-day camp, but we’re going to try to make it as valuable and informative as possible."

Visser plans to make his camp an annual event and wants to see it grow and expand each year.

Chris Paul: Lob City Resident, Local Hero

The Origin of Lob City

You must check out this video! The Origin of Lob City

Earlier today I was on Facebook, and this video popped up on my news feed. It's called 'The Origin of Lob City.' I haven't stopped watching since. Anyone who has seen it knows exactly what I mean. It was absolutely captivating to watch videos of Chris Paul throw perfectly timed alley-oops to the likes of Trent Strickland and Jamaal Levy. Anyone who has been watching the NBA Playoffs this year has seen exactly why the Los Angeles Clippers are appropriately called 'Lob City.' After the jump, I'll take a bit about Chris Paul's career, his strong Wake connection and his playoff run with the Clippers.

In the comments section, feel free to add any great memories you had watching Chris Paul. I'd love to hear about them I was still in high school and was not able to experience this in person.

The least well kept secret in the college transfer world is out.

Former Wake Forest guard Tony Chennault will announce his transfer to Villanova today.

"Tony is happy to be back in the Philly area close to his mom and family," Neumann Goretti assistant John Mosco told SNY.tv.

The Jets were one of two teams whose headquarters Bush visited before the draft. During the visit, coach Rex Ryan hinted, in one way or another, that he just might be wearing a Jets uniform this season.

"I definitely knew there was interest," Bush said with a smile.

The Jets gave away their fourth- and fifth-round picks, but when the 187th pick came up in the sixth round, they called Bush’s name. "I felt like I was the first pick of the draft," said Bush, who signed his four-year rookie deal Sunday. "It was a great feeling."

The 49ers right guard battle is shaping up to be one of the most interesting of the preseason. There has been some discussion of Alex Boone and Anthony Davis potentially getting some preseason work at guard, but I would not be surprised if the 49ers were hoping Daniel Kilgore or Joe Looney took firm control of the right guard position.

Martin Rickman, managing editor of BSD, took a few minutes to discuss some of Looney's strengths and weaknesses as he prepares to enter the NFL. Thanks to Martin for taking a few minutes to discuss Looney.

UPDATE: Alihodzic commits to UAB

UPDATE: Alihodzic commits to UAB after a visit today.

According to Fahro Alihodzic's Twitter account, the 22 year-old 6'10, 240-pound big man has visited/is visiting the Wake Forest campus Wednesday/Thursday. Alihodzic has taken a rather nontraditional path to playing college basketball in the United States. Originally from Bosnia, Alihodzic played his high school basketball in Ohio before he committed to Fordham where he played for a year. He then transferred to Southeastern Community College where he played 16 games. He was also committed to Nebraska after the year at SCC but left after Doc Stadler was fired following this past year.

Click through the jump to see more about Alihodzic's time at his previous stops.

SF's Take: An Open Letter To Everybody, Or Why Nobody's Right

Photo

Ed. Note: And now, yet another take -- or in a matter of speaking -- a response to the response on the viability and long-term prospects of the Wake Forest basketball program.

This party's getting crazy! The past couple of days, we've had two diametrically opposed, both well-written and expressed opinions on the state of the basketball program and Jeff Bzdelik's status as head coach thereof. Honestly, I understand both sides of the equation, I agree with pieces of both sides, and both sides manage to make me laugh.

That's not to say that I think either side is inherently laughable; it's more that I think the two sides are more alike than they might like to think they are, and I don't think either opinion is as "right" as they'd like to think, notwithstanding the fact that opinions can't be right or wrong to begin with, of course.

It's time for me to weigh in. Let's make this even more interesting, shall we?

Read more after the jump....
