Wake Forest Basketball

Catching Up With Former Demon Deacon & Current Springfield Armor G L.D. Williams

Photo

One thing we don't do a good enough job of doing sometimes is keeping up with the former Deacs who were fan favorites in their time at Wake Forest. Luckily, we had the chance to talk with L.D. Williams today, who is still chasing his dream of making the NBA.

Williams was notorious for tenacious defense and thunderous dunks when he was with the Demon Deacons, and he has been rewarded for his play on the NBA D-League's Springfield Armor with an invitation to the Dream Factory Dunk Contest during All-Star Weekend. The guard is averaging 15.5 points and 5.9 rebounds in 34.8 minutes per game.

We talk about a typical game day, his journey to the Armor, his advice to the 2011-2012 Demon Deacons and more after the jump...

Game Recap in Brief: Miami Hurricanes Blow Past Deacs, 74-56

Photo

So this game was as much a tale of two halves as I think I've ever seen. The first half was genuinely good basketball, with the Deacs playing tough, smart. and together to go into the break all knotted up at 34. Miami made plenty of adjustments at the half, and Wake did not, at which point they proceeded to blow us off the floor, no pun intended.

Props need to go to the usual suspects, C.J. Harris and Travis McKie, and also to Chase Fischer, who had his most efficient shooting game by far, and had an awesome 3 assists with no turnovers. Yes, Chase is a shooter, but he continues to show that he's an intelligent, versatile, hard-working player who can impact the game in a number of ways.

Talking Wake Forest-Miami Basketball With Category 6

Photo

REGGIE, WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT EATING ALL THE FLAPJACKS?

We went a bit out of our comfort zone on this one, talking to Jerry from Miami blog Category 6. We got a nice discussion going and you can find my answers to his questions over there. In the meantime, hop on over to the site's Twitter and enjoy as we talk Hurricanes' coach Jim Larranaga, Miami freshman Shane Larkin, Kenny Kadji and more.

Behind Enemy Lines: Miami C Reggie Johnson

Photo

Another game, another scouting report. This time, I'm profiling noted Wake killer and Winston-Salem product, big man Reggie Johnson. As a Wake fan I have a burning dislike for Reggie, considering last year he had 20+ points in a game that Miami only won by one point, and I refuse to believe that he didn't travel on at least one of those baskets (no I'm not bitter, why do you ask?).

Regardless, there is no denying that he's an absolute hoss and is a matchup nightmare for the Deacs considering his ability to rebound and eat up space inside. Of course, all of that isn't even considering his track record against Wake, which is also extremely good.

Game Recap: Deacs Band Together To Top Georgia Tech, 59-50

Photo

It was ugly. Real ugly. The first half was genuinely one of the worst halves of basketball I think I've ever seen. The Deacs led at the break 24-17, looking just a little bit better than the opposition, but still far from composed. The second half was better for both teams, and honestly, after Tech started the second half on a 10-0 run that frankly had me booing in the stands (I boo because I love; I expect better), I feared another Wake loss.

But the Deacs, notably Travis McKie, decided to refuse to lose, and in the end they came out the victors. There were some really good things about the game (believe it or not) and plenty to work on, but at the end of the day it's a win, which honestly has me feeling pretty good, especially given how things usually have been around here lately.

On Wes Miller, UNCG And Playing Like There's No Tomorrow

Photo

Wes Miller looks like a guy who would be carded if he tried to buy cigarettes at a gas station, not like the head coach of a NCAA Division I basketball team.

Yet, the 29-year-old finds himself the leader of not just the hottest squad in the Southern Conference, but one of the hottest teams in the nation.

After a convincing 78-63 win over College of Charleston, the UNC-Greensboro Spartans were left with the tenth win in their last 11 games, and a North Division-leading 10-5 conference record.

This is a far cry from the team Miller inherited after longtime head coach Mike Dement was fired on Dec. 13. The team plays hard, plays together and looks like it would be willing to follow the former Tar Heel guard into a volcano.

Georgia Tech vs. Wake Forest Preview

Photo

Wednesday February 15

7:30 P.M.

Television: RSN, ESPN3

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will travel to Winston-Salem on Wednesday night to take on our Wake Forest Demon Deacons, in what will be a battle between the two bottom-dwellers in the ACC. I think all of the Wake fans will be curious to see how the Deacs respond to that shocker against Clemson. Most everyone I know expected the game to be close, and things just completely fell apart in the second half. Now, Vegas has the Deacs as two point favorites, so we will see which team shows up to The Joel on Wednesday night. I'll provide some analysis after the jump. As always, please feel free to comment!
