Shelton Mitchell has long been considered a very important commit for Jeff Bzdelik and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the class of 2014 and he showed everybody why at the Peach Jam this weekend.
The Peach Jam is the final tournament of the EYBL, the premier league for AAU basketball in the summer. Coming into the championship game, Mitchell was averaging 12.4 PPG (47% shooting, 2/9 from 3-point range), 3.3 RPG and 4.6 APG (2.3 TPG).
Mitchell, along with Theo Pinson (UNC), LJ Peak (Georgetown) and the two big undecideds in Nate Mason and Gary Glark, led the CP3 All-Stars to a 15-3 record throughout the EYBL season to finish first in their division. In the Peach Jam, the All-Stars went 5-1 and then knocked off Team Final behind 15 points and 7 assists from Mitchell.
In the finals, the All-Stars fell behind early, but made a valiant comeback to make it interesting at the end. They couldn't quite get over the last hump though, falling 108-102 to the very talented E1T1, featuring commits from Duke and UNC.
Despite knee problems and a recent decline in rankings, I expect Mitchell to more back up after his summer performances.
Currently, Mitchell is ranked as a four-star on ESPN.com. He is the 69th overall prospect and the 15th best PG in the class of 2014
