I've had an interesting thought rummaging around in my mind for about a week now, but I was waiting for an official message from Wellman to post it.
Jeff Bzdelik will apparently be back, possibly with a three year extension (if reports are to be believed). The three year extension is merely window dressing to the other half of the rumor that came out two weeks ago: the only way Bzdelik survives this next season is by making the NCAA Tournament. While obviously unofficial, the person I talked to about this indicated that this ultimatum does in fact exist and that Wellman will act on it after this season.
So the question I ask to you is this: as a Wake fan, will you be cheering against the Deacs this upcoming season in order to ensure a regime change at the end of next season?
Obviously this can be extrapolated to other sports (is it okay to cheer against your team to improve drafting position? is it okay to cheer against your team to achieve a specific goal based on futility (to avoid forfeiture of a draft pick?) and there is a definite difference between the questions surrounding support of time-limited individuals in college compared to professionals, but ultimately all the specific questions boil down to a broader question: Is it okay to cheer against your team in order to improve its long-term outlook?
Thoughts on this?
