Nothing but away games for both soccer teams this week. Here's how they performed.
#23 Akron 1, #15 Wake Forest 0: Recap
The Deacs surrendered a penalty right before halftime, and despite a second half surge were unable to net an equalizer on Tuesday.
#15 Wake Forest 4, #4 Maryland 3: Recap
As anyone who attended last year's game can attest, these teams don't particularly like each other. The bad blood played out again on Saturday, as the Deacs jumped to a 4-1 halftime lead on two goals from Luca Gimenez, a goal from Sean Okoli, and a Terrapin own goal to offset another penalty. Maryland quickly pushed two goals early in the second half (one of which was ANOTHER penalty... enough with the fouling in the box, guys), but Wake was able to hold on despite consistent Terrapin pressure. The win kept the Deacs in first place in the ACC with Notre Dame, while handing Maryland its first loss in conference.
Next game: home against Davidson (Tuesday, 7 p.m.)
#6 Virginia Tech 2, #19 Wake Forest 1 (OT): Recap
The Deacs started strong courtesy of a goal by freshman Kendall Fischlein in the 11th minute, but a Virginia Tech goal in the 26th minute knotted the score. The teams would remain tied until the 99th minute, when Michelle Tiernan beat the Wake offsides trap and finished past Aubrey Bledsoe.
Next game: away against Clemson (Sunday, 2 p.m., RSN... so a recap will be up sometime tomorrow evening)
