When I saw the theme for the NC State v Wake basketball game announced, something struck me. Out of all of the Wake merchandise I see, it normally isn't gold. Wake doesn't have many gold jerseys, mainly black and white. Having walked through the team stores on campus and at Hanes Mall, I also didn't remember seeing many gold shirts, shorts, and hats. I hopped on the Wake Forest online store and quickly scrolled through the shirts. I counted six gold, non-football, shirts. How can you reasonably ask students and fans to show up for "Gold Rush" when you barely sell gold merchandise? It showed as well, seeing as most of the students arrived in black or tie-dye. The merchandising department at Wake Forest needs to see this and either fix it or don't have any more themed events. Realistically, the only event they could have is "Blackout" because that's all they sell these days: black shirts, black shorts, black jerseys, and black hats. Wake needs an identity for this new generation of basketball. UNC has "Tar Heel Nation" and Duke has the "Cameron Crazies". These kind of fanbases inspire unity and can even lure recruits to their teams. What will Wake be? No one knows, but it needs to be figured out sooner rather than later.
