The week of mayhem and carnage continues. Multiple sources have confirmed that freshman point guard Anthony Fields, who was in line to receive an increase in playing time after the announcement that Tony Chennault was transferring came earlier this week, will also be leaving the program. It is not immediately known to where Fields will be transferring.
"I can confirm Fields is transferring," one source said. "That is 100 percent done." When asked if the transfer papers had already been filed, the source said, "Yes. He knew he wasn't going to play much or at all next year."
Fields played regular minutes in the early-season slate, but found himself unable to get off the bench -- often being overlooked by walk-ons -- during the majority of the ACC schedule.
The guard was part of Jeff Bzdelik's first official recruiting class (since many are quick to point out that 2010 were "Dino's recruits" regardless of the fact that a.) Bzdelik honored each of the five's scholarship and b.) most of the initial staff involved in the recruiting, including top assistant Jeff Battle, as well as Gaudio assistants Rusty LaRue and Walt Corbean, were retained and still on staff). He was part of a three-man 2011 group that included F Daniel Green and SG Chase Fischer.
Fields, who attended Quality Education Academy, averaged one point, one assist and .5 rebounds in 8.9 minutes per game this year. He showed good end-to-end speed and passing ability on the court, but had not yet been able to find his shot or adjust to the high level of ACC play. There is now only one projected point guard on the roster, incoming freshman Codi Miller-McIntyre.
Blogger So Dear previously reported that center Carson Desrosiers will also be leaving the program. The big man would be the eighth transfer or dismissal under Bzdelik's tenure in his two years as head coach.
