Game Recap in Haiku: Wofford Downs Wake, 76-72
Couldn't hit a three
Total lack of rebounding
We need you C.J.
Yeah, painful. Last non-con game, too. Game wasn't as close as the score suggests. On to the next one I guess. When you lose the second leading scorer in the conference and only hit one three in the game, it's bound to be a rough one. On the one hand, I don't expect us to play that badly in many other games the rest of this year given what we've seen so far. On the OTHER other, I am REALLY worried about C.J., and for the love of gravy guys, LEARN TO BOX OUT, thanks in advance.

I have tried to be positive over the past two years. More often than not, I am the person trying to convince others that Bzdelik has a plan that calls for building a certain type of program over several years. Last night changed me. Just about any other coach could have beat that Wofford team with this Wake Forest team last night.

You're not gonna get much argument from me John.
MASSIVE steps backwards last night for sure. But it doesn’t erase ALL the good will I had either. Too many good plays guys just didn’t finish. And they were probably lost without C.J. I’m far from happy but not nearly as mad as you seem to be (there’s nothing wrong with either stance, mind you).

Game recap
I haven’t been this angry and upset since last year’s loss to Stetson. Everything except Travis was horrible last night. Most notably the coaching. Any decent coach should have won this game with or without CJ. No sense of urgency, no apparent desire, total lack of communication, and we let a medocre SoCon team get 17 offensive rebounds when we had 7 footers on the floor vs their one 6’8 guy. Horrible absolutely horrible. Not sure what kind of coaching this team is truly getting.
All good points, sadly.

Let me respectfully disagree.
With our offensive scheme and current roster construction, we really only have two players who can create their own shot/keep defenses somewhat honest: CJ and Travis. Without CJ, the defense’s job becomes pretty simple – contain Travis as best as they can, have someone constantly shadowing Chase, and let Chennault throw himself recklessly at the rim with inevitably poor results.
The bottom line, at least offensively, is that we NEED both Travis and CJ to play. We have too many offensive black holes for teams to fear the others. Last night, Travis started pressing a bit much on the offensive end (a lot more 1 on 1’s than he otherwise does) because there was just a general feeling that no one else was willing or capable of stepping up.
In terms of rebounding, a good portion of their offensive rebounds came on long misses where boxing out wouldn’t have helped a great deal. By my count, we still allowed close to 10 or so non-long offensive rebounds, which is inexcusable, but the 17 number is unfairly high in my opinion.
With all that said, we deserved to lose, which is something that should NEVER be said concerning a SoCon team. We should be beating the Woffords of the world by 15+, and the fact that we’re not speaks to serious underlying problems that must be considered.
I’m willing to write off last night as something of a fluke due to CJ’s absence. I think the dynamic of the game changes considerably if he plays; certainly our offense looks a lot better than the Travis and the 4 Dwarves show we put on last night. I think – and this is really just an opinion – that we’d probably have eked out a close win had CJ played. But again, we should not be eking out close wins against Wofford.
One other thing...
Last night illustrates just how good a year CJ is having. Yes the stats are impressive, but he’s so important to this team in other ways in terms of offense. Plus, he and Travis are basically carrying this team – no one else aside from the occasional glimpses from Chennault or Nikita (gulp) ever attempt to create for themselves.
You disagreed then you didn't
I really wanted to give this team a chance this year and up until the Wofford game had been sticking to the company line that we were better and optimism was on the horizon. But that performance has almost brought me back to square one. Hopefully they can change my mind on Saturday but the most striking issue with BZ’s coaching is that our big men are not getting better and cannot or will not take advantage of their size. In my opinion that was the very simple way to have beaten Wofford without CJ. Rebound, rebound and rebound some more would have secured that game. Plain and simple.
Bzdelik’s teams don’t rebound, so if you’re looking for growth in that area, you’re not going to find any.
Bah da da da da da da da, Go Deacs.

We shouldn’t be a team that loses 1 player and can no longer beat Wofford…that is just so incriminating of Bzzz and the state of this program. The ACC is so awful this year..BC and GT are right in there with us in losing games that ACC teams should not lose on home courts. It is just plain pitiful. I don’t know who in their right mind would pay for tickets to watch us lose to the Woffords of the world…thank God I’m not close and don’t have to make that decision.

Death Spiral
Our program is going in the crapper. We can come out of it, just like we did after the 80s, but the fact is that we have more talent now than we did then. Unfortunately, that seems to indicate a coaching change. We can’t do it now, because no other decent coach would come in with such a short leash. However, unless there is dramatic improvement, 2013 -2014 should probably ring in a new staff. We cannot allow three pitiful years in a row. You don’t want to try to recruit players who have no real memory of ever seeing your team ever play in the NCAAs. When that happens in The ACC, you are done. Just ask Virginia when it happened to them twenty years ago. Haven’t heard from them since.
The Wofford game was terrible in all phases.
Coaching, effort, rebounding, defense, you name it and it was terrible.
People are overreacting as to what needs to be done though imo. Everybody knew that this year was going to be difficult. We have done a pretty good job so far this year in terms of meeting expectations aside from this terrible letdown.
Fortunately we have CJ on the team and don’t have to go through the year without him. At the end of the day it’s just the difference between 13 or 14 wins imo.
