Coach Jim Grobe said Wednesday that Johnson plans to return in 2012 after redshirting for the 2011 season while academically ineligible. He said that Smith is gone for good, having been dismissed because of repeated disciplinary issues. Johnson and Smith both played in 11 games and started five last season, Johnson as a first-year freshman and Smith as a redshirt sophomore. The Deacons' secondary, for the second straight season, has lost a cornerback who played his first season but failed to maintain the required academic progress to be eligible as a sophomore. Dominique Tate of Winston-Salem played as a freshman in 2009, was academically ineligible in 2010 and returned to spring practice eligible to play in 2011.
