Shaka Smart

How high has his stock risen this March?  If Bzdelik can't get things going next year, I'd like to see the Deacs pursue Smart, assuming he's not gobbled up before then.  He's certainly turned VCU around from their misery a couple of seasons ago.  I'm also happy to see Jamie Skeen having such a great year and NCAA run.  I always liked him at Wake and was sorry to see him leave the program.  Any comments?

I am a very big fan of Smart, but he is doing this with all of Anthony Grant’s players. There is no doubt in my mind that Smart is an excellent young coach, but if I were a big time team then I would want to see how he can build a team before I offered him the big bucks, or a long-term contract.

Interesting

How did Bzdelik fare under that test (if you used it when Wellman beelined for his buddy) RAJ? He’s never had a winning conf. record, had two 15 loss/1 win conf. seasons in 4 yrs., and has never won with his own recruits. I’m being totally sincere. Did you like the Bzdelik hire and if so how did he satisfy the “he can build a team” qualification?

I would get down on my knees and thank the powers-that-be if Shaka Smart were hired/Bz the bum was fired

I’m pretty sure anyone would be a great replacement for a coach that’s gone 1-15 in the ACC and the Big 12 in the past 4 years.

Plus Smart stylizes his offense as up-tempo, he’s young, and players will relate to him. Contrast it with Buzzkill, whose offense is confused and plodding, he’s old, and players apparently cry, quit, or transfer in virtue of him/because of him. Buzzout/I’d love a Shaka hire like whoa

You make no sense.

The guy had a fairly underwhelming regular season with a very veteran (and we’re realizing, talented) team and was blessed that he even had a shot to compete in the NCAA.

Since, he has proven himself to be an excellent strategist and motivator, but he has caught his fair share of breaks, too (for instance: why didn’t FSU put a single defender on the throw-in for the game winning lay-up).

Basically, I’m convinced that he’s a good coach, but I wouldn’t offer him a contract based on this season. And I’m with RAJ. I didn’t support the Bzdelik hire at first, either, but he’s my team’s coach for the next year and I’m standing by him.

Furthermore, Smart’s recruiting class is average, at best. To echo RAJ, he has been competing with Grant’s players and his recruiting class next season is solid but unspectacular. Burgess, Reddic, Haley, and Theus will be the backbone of next year’s squad, but they’re Grant’s recruits. Hopefully Smart can pick up where he left off.

Just as is the case with Tad Boyle at Colorado and Brad Stevens at Butler. They can coach for sure and look like they’re creating sustainable programs, but the talent level relative to their success is not showing itself in recruiting (at least based on the standards of SD, GTS, and JF). I hope they’re able to land a few top-tier recruits in the future, but until then…

Consistency, fellas.

His team is shooting 44% from 3-pointers.

Nobody is going to lose shooting that mark over 5 games. I seem to fall along the same lines as you JK.

I think that Smart could be a good coach, but I don’t know that he is one yet. He is an excellent motivator and has certainly taken advantage of the chances given to him.

Overlooking the content of this debate
You make no sense

sounds like something that would get someone else warned by RA, and

Consistency, fellas.
sounds like something that would be upheld by RA as a patronizing tone or couched insult.

I’m not accusing JKIOL of either of those things, but I am highlighting how inconsistent RA applies his rules of conduct. With just as little motive to intend either of those phrases to be insults as JKIOL, it would be a matter of time before someone w/SD/JFizz/DaDeacs/JBishop’s opinion would get an e-threat from RA about being impolite.

?

SD’s comments make no sense and are inconsistent with what he’s been saying in other posts. I was just pointing that out.

My subject line is meant to be taken literally, “You make no sense.” As in, he makes no sense to me. Not sure how this is warn-worthy, but that’s just me. SD can explain himself to me if he pleases and I’ll listen and respond accordingly.

“Consistency, fellas” wasn’t intended to be patronizing or couched. I say “fellas,” a lot and I was just asking for some consistency amongst the virulently anti-Bzdelik contingent around here. (Note: As I said in my comment, I wasn’t a fan of the hire initially, but he’s the coach of my team for the next year and so I support him. If he fails again, then I support any subsequent action)

I would appreciate it if you would not use my post to prove a point with the moderators. If they have a problem, then they’ll let me know.

What about the content of my comment, GTS?

I would kiss Wellman's forehead..

If he only tried to tempt Shaka. I think we should test the market with a few good young coaches. As far as I can see, Buzz’s job is not forged in concrete. Other than Shaka though, there aren’t a ton of “proven” coaches. Shaka will do well wherever he goes. He is young, charismatic, and great at getting his boys to play was a team. I’d give a kidney and a third of my liver to see him at Wake. Trade in that black and yellow, for some black and gold!

jfizzle86... Go DEACS!!

My reason for hesitancy is the current State search

According to Jeff Goodman they have been turned down by a head coach in 5 different conferences. We already tried the market last year and couldn’t get a good, young coach then, so why would we get one now?
