Thoughts From Around The NCAA- 3/8 Butler/UW-Milwaukee & Marquette/Providence Open Thread

Often we spend too much time on the ACC that we don't get to talk about any of the other conferences. So we can talk strategy, the best players in bball or fball, other coaches, the BCS, bracketology, or anything else

For this week we will use this thread as an essential Chat Thread for tournament week. I'll be here all week making posts about as many games as possible!

The content of FanPosts is not necessarily the opinions, thoughts or beliefs of Blogger So Dear.

Since 2003, the only Big 6 conference teams in the top 10 of D to not make the tournament are:

- USC 2010
- Washington State 2009
- VT 2008
- Connecticut 2007
- Washington State 2006
- Washington State 2005

We could see 3 teams in the top 10 not make it this year: Maryland, FSU and Alabama.

by JoshuaR on Feb 17, 2011 12:10 PM EST reply actions

Josh, I take back what I said on the gamethread.

I actually don’t think that Maryland will make the tournament. I wasn’t aware their resume was so bad.

FSU will probably make it because they will judge them based on Singleton if he is going to come back.

If Alabama finishes with 20 wins and 12 wins in conference I don’t see how they can’t make it.

By the way LOL @ Washington State.

I think Alabama has the best chance to make it out of those teams. Even with their weak resume, 12 wins in the conference has to have them feeling good. As for FSU, I am not sure Singleton is coming back. If he doesn’t, I see little reason for the committee to slot them in. It will be interesting to see if they are in this week’s mock bracket they are doing.

by JoshuaR on Feb 17, 2011 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Guys

The bracket makers don’t judge a team based on who their players are and who is hurt. FSU is a lock to make it in the tournament – they are 11-5 in the ACC – they will probably be like a 8/9 seed.

Maryland has no shot without AT LEAST a run to to the finals of the ACC Tournament (they probably would need to win it) and Alabama is right on the bubble – they make it if they win 2 games in the SEC toruney.

A few years back Kenyon Martin broke his leg in a game and was definitely not coming back, they didn’t slight Cincinnati (giving them a 2 seed) even though they were clearly not a 2 seed without him.

by DaDeacs on Mar 8, 2011 8:57 AM EST up reply actions

They did slight Cincinnati. They were going to get a #1 seed until Martin broke his leg, then they gave them a 2 seed. They were 28-3 (16-0 in C USA). They were slated for a #1 seed but then Martin broke his leg. Were they a 2 seed without him? No, but they had earned a #1 seed but were knocked down because of the injury

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

They lost in the 1st round of the C-USA tourney

How ya figure that would have beat out Duke, MICHST, Stanford & Arizona for a #1 seed?

They were knocked down because of a loss – not because the ncaa selection team thought they were worse without Martin.

FSU is 3-2 without singleton (including a 2 point “good” loss to UNC) – they aren’t going to miss the tournament.

by DaDeacs on Mar 8, 2011 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, its nice to to know that now but that conversation happened before FSU played any games w/otu Singleton.

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

My bad

I thought this was a new thread.

by DaDeacs on Mar 8, 2011 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Dude

That’s the writers opinion – they played in an awful division, only playing 4 top 25 teams all year – if you don’t think strength of schedule is a major factor in seeding, take a look at all the mid-majors that are ranked in the top 25 or have high RPIs and still get 7 or 8 seeds.

by DaDeacs on Mar 8, 2011 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

And its your opinion that getting a 2 seed was generous. It’s the majorities opinion they would have gotten a #1 if Martin had not gotten injured, meaning they likely would have won the C USA tournament.

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Ok lets step back

I think that was a consensus without KMart they would not play like a #2 seed (like BYU with Frederette would not be a top seed).

They were on pace to get a #1 seed if they won, sure – but they didn’t. My point being, they didn’t drop the ranking because they had an injured star – they dropped because looking on paper, they took a bad loss in their conference tournament.

by DaDeacs on Mar 8, 2011 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Thinking about it though, what caused them to drop a seed line? Was it the injury or the loss? If they lost in the C USA tournament w/Martin healthy would they have gotten a 1? Nobody knows.

I guess the point is, you can’t really seperate the injury from the loss as to why they were dropped. Were they dropped because of the loss? Well, that happened because of the injury.

Tonight we have VCU-ODU on right now (Jamie Skeen plays for VCU), and St. Mary's-Gonzaga headlining.

Also on is St Peters-Iona (right now), and Wofford-CoC at 9. Should be a great night of basketball.

Comment here if y’all are around and watching. Could use the company from London haha.

I'm watching the VCU-ODU game..

ODU up 21-14. If VCU wins then it steals a bubble spot from somebody else (maybe BC, Clemson, or VT) because ODU and George Mason are essential locks at this point.

not to pick on you guys unfairly but

i just checked in for a sec but after scanning things it seems pretty sad to me that all there is is rah-rah cheerleading for crappy recruits nobody else in the ACC was aiming high for, while we’ve been in more consecutive embarrassing losses where we have the same exact problems we had at the beginning of the season and still don’t show up for entire games. it just seems like there’s alot of pretending the coach is cool under the auspices of “i’m just bein a realist, he’s not gonna get fired so why bother talking about how bad he is” + “people just dogging the coach is unproductive when we should unconditionally be happy about these recent NR & 2** recruits”. Just my thoughts

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Mar 7, 2011 11:02 PM EST reply actions

I found this post informative, and really adding to the conversation.

I get it. It was a very bad year. Does every thread have to turn into doom and gloom? No. Should we not be welcoming and positive about kids that are excited to come to Wake? I certainly hope not. So chillax, brah.

Seriously

Give it a rest, we get it. We can’t all be as negative as you though. That has nothing to do with this discussion, there is no need to add your negative thoughts in every post.

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

ditto for you

we’ve lost 3 games and it’s objectively strange to see the pom poms out for questionable recruits and no game analysis at all. like they didn’t happen, or if recognizing them is bad because realizing things are bad is bad, even though it’s reality. i’m okay if you love the pom poms-POV but a little balance is all i said, in terms of “umm where did the last 3 games go, did they not happen?”, don’t make it into something it’s not chief

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Mar 8, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

There is a difference in being very excited for the players that we are bringing in,

and welcoming them into the program. These kids chose Wake because they want to succeed on and off the court. It makes no sense to bash them if you love the University.

The reason we have had no game analysis is due to extenuating circumstances with Martin, and the fact that I have been in London. There will be plenty of stuff up before the ACC Tournament, but it is also Spring Break for Wake Forest, and I am vacationing. Just keep in mind that we all watch the games, and just because there are no previews and recaps does not mean they don’t happen. They take time to compile and do research, and honestly we have been a little shorthanded due to things in our personal lives.

We will be back and at it by mid-week.

I’m just saying there is a time and a place for your negativity and this thread is not it. It just seems like you are trying to pile on, when this discussion was not about the team in anyway. It seemed really unnecessary and only meant to incite bad feelings.

Alright guys...let's not do this here....

I don’t mind you expressing your opinion GTS, but I would prefer if we did it on the correct threads, because this is primarily about other NCAA things happening.

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

agree with you RA, it's not the place apologies i didn't know where-to/where 'the place' should be

and believe me i understand the business of being too busy, def feel that.

and ‘joshuaR’ it’s not “piling on,” i was asking a question & RA answered it the way it should’ve been addressed, i wasn’t trying to set our dumpster fire of a season into an atom bomb for the hell of watching the season burn worse on some internet thread, i was merely bemused by the enthusiasm for recruits that look on paper weaker than what we had previously and as weak as what the coach recruited on paper and on the court at CU contrasted with the seeming invisibility of the last 3 games, i like the others who are sick of the coach as a separate issue aren’t out to make you feel bad, it was a valid question that RA properly addressed, fin

by Grand Tanyon Sturtze on Mar 8, 2011 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Its piling on when it has nothing to do with the subject matter, in my opinion.

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

like DaDeacs said to you earlier 'big' josh

There is no wallowing in calling a spade a spade if you think you see one and there’s no forum to talk about the last 3 curbstomps we’ve been on the receiving end on yet there’s a lot of bzzz about recruits. If there had been a place to review the last 3 double-digit losses and GTS posted here then maybe you’d be making sense. But since there isn’t, you make none. Like DaDeacs said in the other thread,

don’t patronize people and nobody cares about your feelings – if you want to be positive, great, be positive, you’re going to be wrong, but be positive.
Don’t pester people with comments like “you’re posting in the wrong forum” when there isn’t a forum up yet and people just want to share their opinions or reasonable observations, it’s obnoxious

Just to note, if you want to make a forum to talk on about whatever, there are FanPosts.

As long as this doesn’t turn into what happened last time (on both sides), it is fine to make FanPosts and talk about what you want to talk about.

That’s what separates SBNation and Blogger So Dear from any other site.

I already apologized for not having threads up. It has been an odd couple of weeks for all of us here personally. Sometimes real life gets in the way of what we do for fun.

Wofford may be dangerous

I remember last year watching them almost stun Wisconsin in the 1st round with almost the same team.

If they get a 13 seed again, the 4 seed better watch out in the that game – I could see them taking out a 3 or 4 seed this year.

Just like Cornell last year, its going to be the same for everyone. I have one in mind but they have to win tonight and draw a favorable 14 seed or a good matchup as a 15 seed

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Belmont right? They are going to be the popular pick this year.

I may pick 2 14 seeds this year based on matchups. The first team I mentioned will probably be a 15/16 seed, so I am hoping for a favorable 2-15 matchup

by JoshuaR on Mar 8, 2011 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

NOOOO NOT AT ALL THAT'S NOT RIGHT!!!111111ONEONEONE

But seriously, Belmont is top 25 in KenPom, and yet they will draw a 13ish seed. I feel bad for the #4 team that draws them.

Got a chance to see two of their games, and watch from behind the bench when they were here for the Preseason NIT. They are the real deal, and Coach Byrd is just outstanding.

Providence vs. Marquette—Pretty much a “must-win” for Marquette, and if you haven’t already, you gotta check out Marshon Brooks then you probably should (set Big East scoring record with 468 points this year).

UW-Milwaukee vs. Butler- Both teams probably need to win the Horizon to get in. Butler is obviously last year’s runner-up.

Big games today

You figure Richmond is out with a lose to little Rhody.

Marquette is probably in, but a win over WVU would clinch it and a lose could let another ACC team sneak in.

And is anyone gonna go watch the MEAC tourney today at the Joel? One of illustrious 8 teams we beat is playing today – Go Hampton! Win and improve our RPI!!

Rutgers just got JOBBED.

Literally like 4 horrible calls/no calls in the last minute.

by SamuraiFoochs on Mar 9, 2011 4:48 PM EST reply actions

The last two series were awful

Over the back no call – that was the worst no call I have seen in awhile.

Then, the guy clearly walks, steps out of bounds and tosses the ball into the stands – the ball lands in the stands as time is expiring – they should have had 2 seconds from half court – easily time to get off a shot in that time. Not to mention that throwing the ball probably should have been a tech.

Gotta assume something was going on there – I mean, I have to wait for 5 minutes in the middle of a game while a ref looks at tape to determine if an elbow was a flagrant foul or just a normal foul, but these refs run off the court without even taking a second look at this???

by DaDeacs on Mar 9, 2011 6:10 PM EST up reply actions
