At Wake Forest, the best AD in the business, Ron Wellman, decided enough was enough. Dino Gaudio was initially hired to keep a monster recruiting class together after the untimely death of Skip Prosser, and it showed. His teams were inconsistent, never played at a level comparable to their talent, and played their worst basketball of the season in March. It took a date with Wake Forest Central (aka Rick Barnes and Texas) to get them out of the first round of the NCAAs, and then they promptly bent over and got sodomized by Kentucky. Wellman brought in the head coach of Colorado, Jeff Bzedlik, to be the anti-Gaudio. The only reason I'm not panning this hire is because Wellman has been right more often than wrong on his coaching hires. He tries to get coaches that fit into the Wake Forest culture, something that Gaudio apparently didn't (his behind the scenes behavior was the clincher in his firing according to insiders...he wasn't a nice guy in a department where even the football coach is nice to everyone). Bzedlik was struggling at Colorado, but he did do wonders at Air Force and was pretty successful as an NBA head coach. However, just like Steve Donahue, Bzedlik is going to have to get it done in the recruiting area, and that's a tall order considering the two powerhouses an hour away.
