Deacon Dump 2/8: Chip and Stan get rings

First of all, congrats to Stan Arnoux and Chip Vaughn on their Super Bowl rings. I know they would have loved to be out there this year and hopefully next year they'll be injury free and ready to help out the defending champs. The Deacs are moving on to a home matchup against B.C. tomorrow (and it is looking like this is another of the miserable days when I can't find the game on tv, but I'll keep you posted on whether or not I can find an online feed). So, in the next couple days we'll get you ready for the Eagles. Here are Monday's links...

Champions in Training: I'm a Demon Deacon!!
NOTE: Welcome to Malcolm Nunley! There were a few schools I was looking at like UNC, NC State, Wake Forest, Tennessee and Virginia. These were all good schools, but I decided to go to Wake Forest University on a full athletic scholarship. It was the best choice for after I discussed everything with my family. I will be close to home and I will be receiving one of the best educations in the Nation.

Ballsy ACC Power Rankings " Big Duke Balls
No 3 WAKE FOREST They’re 5-2 in their last seven, with their only two loses come at Duke and at Georgia Tech. It’s like asking out Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba and getting rejected…there’s no shame in that. Of course, they lost those two games by an average of 20.5ppg, which would be like asking out Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba and having them throw water in your face and kneeing you in the nuts…there’s a little shame in that. So far this season, Wake has dropped five games and in those five loses, they’ve shot 24-85 from three-point range. That’s 28%. Maybe they should take less three’s, just a thought. NCAA OUTLOOK: Lock. If they finish 4-3, they’ll lock down a second straight 20-win season.

FSU 'D' puts Wake to sleep | tallahassee.com | Tallahassee Democrat
Despite her best intentions, Semrau's 15th-ranked women's basketball team saw its lead against visiting Wake Forest grow and grow. By the time it was over, the Seminoles had run away with a record-setting 83-38 victory.

FOXNews.com - Top 25 after Week 13
Wake Forest and Texas A&M both made return engagements to the poll. The Demon Deacons swept games at home to Miami and on the road against Virginia while A&M snapped Missouri's long home winning streak and then followed it up with a victory against Baylor in College Station.

Weekly Watch: Week 12 - ESPN
Wake Forest: Beating Miami and winning at Virginia wouldn't normally be cause for celebration and praise. But the Demon Deacons were able to win on the road, in overtime at UVa, to creep within a game of first-place Duke. In the preseason, the Demon Deacons kept telling me that Ish Smith was as much if not more of a leader than Jeff Teague last season. He's proving that to be true.

Basketball Players of The Week - CharlotteObserver.com

Tyler Lewis, Forsyth Country Day: Lewis, who lives in Statesville, had 32 points in a three overtime win against Greensboro Day Thursday. Lewis, a 5-9 point guard, made 3-point shots at the end of regulation and the first two overtimes to keep the game going. In the third OT, he made two free throws to seal the win.

Smith can say whatever he likes, but as Clougherty will undoubtedly tell you, there’s nothing to respect about an official who doesn’t have the courage to make the correct call when the game is on the line. And it happened twice Saturday. Hopefully, the man best known for doing the right thing at the right time in 1989 will sit his current officials down first thing Monday morning and show them how it’s done. Before they decide the outcomes of any more ACC games.

Wake's Smith too much for UVa to stop | Charlottesville Daily Progress

Evans said he couldn’t pester Wake’s senior star the way he does some foes because Smith has been around the block, is quick, has good vision and can slice and dice a defense to shreds. "Stuff like that doesn’t bother him," Evans said of his defensive tactics. "The first time we played off of him. This time we tried to pressure him and see what he would do, and he just did the same thing. He’s the best point guard I’ve ever played on this level. You think you’ve got him and he makes a pass to the open guy for two."

Deacs in OT

"I know he hit him on his arm," Smith said. "But you know what, I respect every call the refs make. They allowed us to play toward the end. I respected the call, even though we'd have liked to have had it. "I should have made the shot, so it shouldn't have gotten that far."

Kuiper’s 3-Pointer: Wake-UVa Articles

What if he could shoot? He would be unstoppable. Even though teams are at times giving him the jump shot, he still is determined to get in the lane and wreck havoc on his opponents. That’s what he did against the Cavs down the stretch. He made every big play when his team needed it.

My Take on Wake - Leaving Charlottesville in the Broad Daylight | JournalNow.com

"L.D. is just so gosh-darn smart,‘’ Gaudio said. "We can run our stuff at (power forward). He’s never practiced at (power forward) but he knows. He’s smart and he’s got a great I.Q. We’re running plays and he’s at (power forward) and he knows where he’s supposed to be.‘’

No Zenevitch, no problem - EagleTribune.com, North Andover, MA

The Wake Forest-bound Desrosiers had only nine points but delivered 11 boards, four blocks, four assists and one uncanny no-look bounce pass to a streaking Jaycob Morales.

Lions beat MHS in offensive-minded game

In one of the most entertaining games of the season, J.T. Terrell scored 31 points Friday as West Charlotte barely outdistanced Mooresville, 89-85. Terrell may have stolen the show on offense, but the Blue Devils had the better supporting cast.
