First Impression
After a brief look and not nearly enough research I could see a West Virginia upset of Kansas. Arizona has a serious chance to knock of Utah and create an interesting 4 vs 12 if Wake can put a strong performance against a tough Cleveland State team. Louisville should be able to hand their first weekend fairly easily, I do like Siena though. Very fun upcoming week.
While we unfortunately got the 4 seed, I think we got the lowest 5 seed if we are able to advance. Arizona is tough inside with Budinger and Hill, but Wake usually struggles more with teams with big guards. The potential Wake/Louisville game is very intriguing, but there are a lot of steps between now and then.
I don’t think Michigan State or Kansas are very strong this year. IMO, the FF team def comes from the top half. The OSU/Louisville game could be interesting as well.
Match-up
We match up very well with L’Ville.
Contrary to what the committee thinks, L’ville is the weakest of the #1 seeds. Their BE schedule was the equivalent of UNC, Duke and Wake once while playing UVA, GTech, NCSU and miami twice each.
If we can make it past Cleveland State, which could prove to be a tough matchup, we could conceivably make it to the final four. I agree with WakeJake, I believe that the potential Louisville/Wake Forest matchup will be very interesting. I think that we match up well with Louisville if we can break their press and contain Earl Clark and Terrence Williams. Louisville creates offense from their defense, so if we can take care of the basketball then we’ll have a good shot. I believe that Kansas has been coming on strong here as of late, except for the Big 12 tourney of course. Cole Aldrich has been putting up some decent numbers. With that being said, West Virginia with Devin Ebanks coming on strong could beat Kansas and Boston College could take down Michigan State. After all the drama, I can definitely see us coming out of this bracket. Ford Field here we come!
Cleveland State
Plays a 6’1 SF. There’s NO 6’1 player on the planet that can cover either James or Farouq. It should be layup drills.
If we lose to Cleveland State I’ll cry. I’ve seen Utah and Arizona and they are smart teams but if wake plays decently they should be able to beat either of those – Utah is a one trick pony with Neville and we’ve done well against teams that rely on a big man down low. Arizona is streaky like Wake and could be on fire or cold as ice.
I do think Louisville is the weakest of the 1 seeds, but they have been playing good ball lately. They’re on a roll and that’s dangerous. However, I would love to see another big matchup with them. We need revenge for the orange bowl. Then let’s hope West Virginia survives and we can exact revenge on them too (although I suspect it will be Mich State that advances out of the low bracket).
Just make it to the Sweet 16 and I’ll be happy.
